The Complete Aircrew Training Simulator (CATS) uses Virtual Reality technology to provide Human Factors and Decision Making Training, Emergency Medical Retrieval, Maritime and Overland SAR Operations. The scenarios are constructed prior to and can be manipulated by the Instructor during the training to ensure the desired outcomes are achieved by the participants.

The CATS technology includes a dual control integrated cockpit with reconfigurable rear cabin to capture a whole crew dynamic when decision making and human factors training is being conducted.

Wearing VR HMD’s (Head Mounted Devices), trainees are able to adopt standard crew positions and undertake standard actions as though they are in a real aircraft. Crews are also able to rehearse skills under a wide variety of environmental situations, such as rain, wind, dust, cloud, fog, during day and night conditions, exposing them to difficult scenarios, under safe and controlled conditions, where decision-making and crew co-ordination skills can be monitored and assessed. The CATS is also capable to simulate use of Night Vision Goggles (NVG) for the entire crew.

CATS features a functioning hoist system that provides the operator with tactile feedback whilst the cable is seen in VR. The system is equipped so Instructors can fail the hoist and the cable can be cut in VR.

The virtual hoisting capability also enables many situations to be replicated, such as hoisting within and from forests, cliffs, urban areas, or maritime scenarios, such as retrieval from helipads, ships and the ocean. Many types of role equipment can be simulated in the CATS system, including rescue strops and baskets.

Similarly to the FFS for pilots but at an even greater scale, the CATS allows to significantly reduce the required number of actual flying hours required for initial and continuation training of Aircrewman and rescue Crewman roles.
